Week two of the college football season is now upon us. There are some really great matchups, but mostly the games look to be extremely one-sided. We do have a top 10 and a top 15 matchup this week, both of which are taking place in Pac-12 territory. Michigan and Notre Dame will play their final game for the foreseeable future, and my Hogs are in position to snap their 10-game losing streak. Looks like it’ll be another good week of college football.
Notable Games
7Michigan State at 3Oregon This is a huge game, but because it is so early in the season, it might not have too much of an effect on either team. As long as it is a close game, neither team will fall too far. I think it will be a close game and low scoring by Oregon standards. This Michigan State team is a lot like last year’s Stanford team. Oregon hasn’t been able to figure out the Cardinal defense, but this Spartan team is a little younger. They have some major offensive weapons in Connor Cook and Tony Lippett, but I don’t think that it will be enough to overcome this explosive Oregon offense. I think the game will go back and forth for most of the first 3 quarters, but that Oregon will pull away in the end. I am picking Oregon by a TD.
Virginia Tech at 8Ohio State Ohio State might have lost Braxton Miller, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still a good team. They are not nearly as good as they were with Miller, but I think they will be able to get this win. This game will be a major indicator for the way this season will turn out for both teams. Virginia Tech has been underwhelming the last couple of seasons, but I think they will be a little better this year. I think they will put up a fight against the Buckeyes. But much like Ohio State did against Navy, they will pull ahead in the end and win the game. I am picking Ohio State by a TD.
14USC at 13Stanford We are once again treated to a 13-14 game. This one should a little more interesting for a little longer. Stanford will be looking for revenge from last year’s game when and unranked USC squad beat the Cardinal 20-17 late in the season. I expect another hard fought game, but with a different outcome. While Stanford is the home team, classes haven’t started in Palo Alto, meaning the student attendance probably won’t be extremely overwhelming. Even with that, I still think Stanford is the better team and will get it done in front of their home crowd. I am picking Stanford by less than a TD.
Michigan at 16Nortre Dame This will be the last Michigan vs Notre Dame game for a while. Both teams have a lot to prove in this game. Notre Dame needs to show they can compete even with players suspended. Michigan needs to show they are better than last season. Devin Gardner and David Funchess return for the Wolverines but they can’t beat anyone by themselves. I think this will be abother close game, home field advantage will be a big part of this game. I am picking Notre Dame by a TD or less.
East Carolina at 21South Carolina I don’t think this will be a particularly close game, but it needs to be a huge in for South Carolina if they want to stay ranked and in a position to compete in the SEC. Dylan Thompson needs to have a good game to grow his confidence before getting into conference play. ECU is not a team you can take lightly and beat. They aren’t as good as the Gamecocks, but they aren’t bad either. South Carolina should win this game, put there is a potential for another upset in Williams-Brice. I am picking South Carolina by at least a TD.
BYU at Texas Texas has not been lucky this season. Though they did get a big win over North Texas last week, they are losing a couple more players including QB David Ash. That is just adding to a long list of player the Longhorns don’t have. BYU also had a good week at Connecticut in their season opener. Even though the game is in Texas, I just don’t think the Longhorns have the experience to win this game. It might be a very tough year for Texas. I am picking BYU by about a TD.
Nicholls State at Arkansas Is this finally the week that Arkansas ends their school record losing streak? I think it is. The Hogs looked very good in the first half against Auburn and showed some really good things. QB Brandon Allen looked much better than he did last year, even with the pick 6. I think the Razorbacks have the chance to have a huge game this weekend. They need to show they can run the ball, get the receivers more involved, and make some plays in the secondary. If Arkansas plays like they did in the first half against Auburn, they are going to win big time. Of course I’ll be at the game. It’ll be good to be back in the Trough at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. WPS!
