The regular season is done (except in the Big 12 and Sun Belt). Conference Championships are coming up and could lead to a major shake up in the final final 4. Even though these rankings don’t really matter, here are my thoughts on the penultimate CFP rankings of the season.
Here are the new rankings:
1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
4. Iowa
5. Michigan State
6. Ohio State
7. Stanford
8. Notre Dame
9. Florida State
10. North Carolina
11. TCU
12. Baylor
13. Ole Miss
14. Northwestern
15. Michigan
16. Oregon
17. Oklahoma State
18. Florida
*19. Houston
*20. USC
*21. LSU
22. Temple
23. Navy
24. Utah
*25. Tennessee
The top 5 stayed the same. I had Michigan State at 4 in my rankings, but since Iowa and Sparty play for the Big 10 title, whichever one wins will get the 4th spot if Clemson and Alabama win. Ohio State is on the outside looking in and is hoping for Alabama and Stanford to lose.
I don’t really understand Florida State above North Carolina. The ‘Noles beat a struggling Florida team and the Tar Heels could win the ACC. If UNC doesn’t win, then the ranking won’t really matter.
TCU jumped 8 spots after a 2OT win over Baylor. Neither team looked good in that game but I think the boost in the ranking has more to do with a healthy Trevone Boykin.
Houston will be playing in a New Year’s 6 bowl if they win the American conference.
USC and LSU jumped back into the rankings. I think they are a little high at 20 and 21, but I do think they should be ranked.
I have no idea why Tennessee is ranked after beating Vanderbilt, but I’m an SEC fan so I won’t question it too much.
*Fun fact: Arkansas has road wins over 13Ole Miss, 21LSU, and 25Tennessee. The only other team that has road wins over 3 teams currently ranked in the top 25? The #3 Oklahoma Sooners.
